Image Fusion Based Enhancement of Electromagnetic Nondestructive Evaluation

Nondestructive evaluation NDE is implemented in various industrial sectors. Different modalities have been developed for NDE applications during the last few decades. There is a tradeoff between advantages and limitations associated with each technique and even within the same technique using different inspection parameters. This research is oriented to enhance electromagnetic NDE using image fusion for images obtained with different modalities. The research focuses on images acquired with eddy current inspection. A system will be developed based on conventional as well as the emerging pulsed eddy current inspection. Computational model based on finite element analysis will be built to characterize interaction between source and system under test, and the system will be validated with experimental results. An image fusion system will then be designed and tested using eddy current images acquired experimentally as well as from computational model. Success in this research should increase the reliability of detection of hidden flaws in and minimize false alarms. This should provide a useful tool to various engineering disciplines in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
